Postcard Cabins-Eastern Catskills
If you're looking for a little escape from NYC, look no further than Postcard Cabins (Formerly Getaway House)! We had the opportunity to stay here thanks to winning a contest from Veterinary Emergency Group where we won a $500 gift card. We decided to book a two night stay at the Eastern Catskills location and chose this spot over the Western Catskills because of it's proximity to hiking trails and the Kaaterskill Falls in particular.
Transportation
We drove from NYC to the campgrounds and it was about a 2.5 hour drive. As for public transit options, there are some trains that get you nearby but you will still have to rent a car or book a car service to get you to the campground. It is helpful to have a car because the hiking trails are a little ways away.
Fees
Postcard Cabins are fully dog friendly for a $50 pet fee which includes bowls, a bag of treats, poop bags, and a tie out for your dog when you are outside the campground. For the cabin fee itself, they often have sales so if you aren't booking urgently, wait a few days and a new sale will probably pop up! We ended up saving 25% off because we waited for a sale.
Food
For food, there are a handful of restaurants in the area but we stopped by the nearby grocery store and picked up some stuff we could cook at the cabin. The cabin includes a pot, a pan, utensils, dishes, and basics like salt/pepper and a small packet of oil. It also has foil if you want to do any cooking on the fire pit.
Cabin
The cabin itself was cozy and comfortable. In addition to all the kitchen supplies mentioned above, it had a bathroom stocked with shampoo, conditioner and soap, fresh towels, and a nice queen sized bed with comfy bedding. There was a lot of storage underneath the bed for tucking away your bags, and putting your dog bed if your dog is small like Benji. The cabin had a great heat and a/c system and it was chilly at night but that cabin stayed toasty! Outside there are two chairs, a picnic table, and a fire pit. They also offer s'mores kits, coffee and tea, and firewood all for an extra fee. We ended up stocking up on s'mores stuff at the local grocery store.
Kaaterskill Falls
Nearby the Eastern Catskills, we ended up traveling to Kaaterskill Falls. They are the tallest waterfall in New York State and they are absolutely incredible. It is about a 20 minute drive from the campsite and definitely worth the trip. It is a dog friendly hike that is pretty short but steep with a lot of stairs. During the week you can park nearby the top of the falls, but on the weekends, the falls can get really busy so you have to park further and take a trolley to the entrance.
Hunter Mountain Brewery
After the hike, we drove over to Hunter Mountain Brewery which allows dogs indoors in their front area as well as on their side patio. They had quite a few beer options and also food options but we just stopped for a drink.
Summary
Overall, the trip to the Eastern Catskills was an awesome trip! We really enjoyed the experience and being able to stay in the forest but have a comfy bed to go back into at the end of the day. We appreciate the opportunity to be able to go thanks to Veterinary Emergency Group. It was a nice little getaway!
We give this experience 3.5 paws for being a great dog friendly stay!
